Kékfrankos

Why this particular wine?

Kékfrankos 2019 from the Etyeki Kúria winery is an excellent red wine that exemplifies the unique terroir of the Hungarian region of Sopron. Kékfrankos is the Hungarian name for Frankovka Blue and is made from grapes harvested from a particularly warm plot overlooking Lake Fertő. Aged for 12 months in 300-liter Hungarian and Austrian oak barrels, with 30% new oak barrels. The wine offers an intense aromatic profile, a burst of fruitiness, and a subtle oak barrel influence.

Etyeki Kúria Winery was founded on Öreghegy (which means Old Hill) in Etyek in 1996. From the very beginning, the winery was known for respecting traditions, but at the same time with an innovative mindset. It was the first winery to plant the Pinot Noir variety in the Etyek–Buda wine region, and the wine from this variety has won many world awards for the winery.

The head winemaker, Sándor Mérész, joined the winery ten years ago. Since then, he has been shaping the unique style of their wines, combining local experience with the latest research and an international approach. Thanks to his professional work, every year since 2013, Sándor has been among the fifty nominees for the "Vinár Vinárov" award in Hungary.

The original two hectares of Etyek have increased to the current 54 hectares of vineyards, spread over two wine regions: Sopron and Etyek, where the trio of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are grown. Thanks to the innovative design of their building, efficient and gentle processing of grapes by gravity can be realized. Part of Etyeki's key goals is to continually reduce their environmental footprint and become as "green" a sustainable winery as possible.
